Mit Overwatch<\/span> 2 wollte Blizzard Entertainment wieder etwas st\u00e4rker mit der Community kommunizieren und zu der Zeit zur\u00fcckkehren, in der es regelm\u00e4\u00dfig Update-Videos mit den Entwicklern gab. Aus diesem Grund meldet sich Game Director Aaron Keller aktuell auch immer mal wieder auf der offiziellen Internetseite von Overwatch<\/span> zu Wort. Dort ver\u00f6ffentlicht der Entwickler informative Beitr\u00e4ge zu wichtigen Themen wie beispielsweise den Problemen der Rangliste, der Arcade<\/span> oder auch den Schwierigkeiten mit Map-Pools.<\/p>\n

Gestern Abend wurde nun der neueste Beitrag dieser Art ver\u00f6ffentlicht. In diesem Beitrag spricht Keller recht ausf\u00fchrlich \u00fcber das aktuelle Meta in der Rangliste von Overwatch<\/span> 2. Die dritte Saison l\u00e4uft mittlerweile schon seit einigen Wochen und mittlerweile hat sich gezeigt, dass sich die Balance des Spiels in einer sehr soliden Position befindet. Beinahe alle Unterst\u00fctzter des Spiels sind in allen Wertungsbereichen<\/span> der Ladder<\/span> n\u00fctzlich. Besonders stark im Rampenlicht steht aktuell aber wohl Brigitte, die derzeit besonders viele Siege f\u00fcr ihre Teams einfahren kann. Brigitte hat in beinahe allen Bereichen (mit Ausnahme der Top 500) die h\u00f6chste Siegrate<\/span> von allen Unterst\u00fctzern des Spiels.<\/p>\n

Es w\u00e4re eigentlich nur logisch anzunehmen, dass die Spieler von Overwatch<\/span> 2 einen Helden mit einer \u00fcberdurchschnittlich hohen Siegrate<\/span> auch extrem h\u00e4ufig verwenden w\u00fcrden. Laut Aaron Keller scheint diese Annahme aktuell aber falsch zu sein und nicht wirklich zuzutreffen. Brigitte tr\u00e4gt zwar oft zu den Siegen ihrer Teams bei, aber die Spieler verwenden sie trotzdem nicht ann\u00e4hernd so oft wie andere Unterst\u00fctzer des Spiels.<\/p>\n

Die am h\u00e4ufigsten von Spielern in Overwatch<\/span> 2 verwendeten Unterst\u00fctzer sind wohl Ana<\/span>, Kiriko<\/span> und Mecy<\/span>. Diese drei Charaktere liegen in beinahe allen Wertungsbereichen<\/span> an der Spitze. Die einzige Ausnahme sind Bronze und Silber, weil dort Moira<\/span> ganz eindeutig an der Spitze der beliebten Unterst\u00fctzer steht. Wenn diese Daten korrekt sind, dann gibt scheinbar immer einige Helden, die h\u00e4ufiger gespielt werden als der Unterst\u00fctzer mit der h\u00f6chsten Siegrate<\/span> im aktuellen Meta von Overwatch<\/span> 2.<\/p>\n

Diese Angaben des Game Directors<\/span> sind auf jeden Fall sehr interessant, weshalb sie in den vergangenen 24 Stunden auch schon viele Diskussionen ausgel\u00f6st haben. Overwatch<\/span> 2 ist ein kompetitiver Shooter, in dem gewisse Helden basierend auf den letzten Balance\u00e4nderungen<\/span> immer ein wenig besser sind als andere Charaktere. Daher w\u00fcrde man eigentlich erwarten, dass an Siegen interessierte Spieler sich immer an das etablierte Meta halten. Die Daten der Entwickler unterst\u00fctzen diese Annahme aber nicht und es sieht eher danach au, als w\u00fcrden Spieler lieber ihre Favoriten ausw\u00e4hlen.<\/p>\n

Basieren auf diesen Daten kann man davon ausgehen, dass die Spieler von Overwatch<\/span> sich nicht wirklich f\u00fcr das etablierte Meta interessieren. Selbst in hohen Bereichen der Wertung m\u00f6gen es die Spieler wohl nicht, wenn ihre Auswahl eingeschr\u00e4nkt wird und sie nicht aus dem gesamten Pool an Helden ausw\u00e4hlen d\u00fcrfen. Menschen haben ihre favorisierten Charaktere und das Verwenden dieser Helden steht scheinbar weiterhin \u00fcber der „<\/span>rechnerisch richtigen Wahl„<\/span>. Der Wechsel zu einem besseren, unbeliebten Helden ist scheinbar unwahrscheinlich.<\/p>\n

Aaron Keller wirft in seinem Beitrag auch noch ein, dass die Heldenwahl auch noch von anderen Faktoren beeinflusst werden k\u00f6nnte. Beispielsweise spielen sowohl der Aufbau des eigenen Teams als auch die ausgew\u00e4hlte Map eine wichtige Rolle. Das Team geht davon aus, dass talentierte Spieler bestimmte Helden aus einem guten Grund ausw\u00e4hlen. Die Entwickler sammeln derzeit zus\u00e4tzliche Daten, um weiteren Faktoren auszuwerten. Sollte bei dieser Sache etwas Interessantes herauskommen, dann m\u00f6chte Keller das Thema in einem anderen Beitrag erneut ansprechen.<\/p>\n

Ich finde es durchaus interessant, wie sich ein Meta in solch einem Titel etabliert und wie die Spieler das Ganze dann einfach ignorieren. In Overwatch<\/span> 2 kann ich mir durchaus vorstellen, dass Beliebtheit eine wichtigere Rolle als Spielst\u00e4rke spielt. Schlie\u00dflich sind die Figuren in Overwatch<\/span> nicht nur reine Spielteine auf einem Brett, sondern Blizzard verkauft diese Figuren als Charaktere mit Hintergr\u00fcnden und einer eigenen Pers\u00f6nlichkeit. Wer eine Verbindung zu einem Charakter aufbaut, der m\u00f6chte diese Figur nat\u00fcrlich in Spielen verwenden. Selbst dann, wenn sie nicht optimal ist.<\/p>\n

A few weeks ago, we published the first in this series of updates on the game. It\u2019s crazy how much has happened since then! We launched Season 3, announced a collab with One-Punch Man, and I\u2019m now dating Genji! I feel so lucky\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

I wanted to dive into two topics today. Season 3 balance and the matchmaker.<\/span><\/p>\n

We feel that the start of Season 3 is in a much better state of balance than the start of Season 2. We hear from players that balance is the best it\u2019s been since the launch of OW2, while the game feels fresh based on all the changes made. It\u2019s been great watching that discussion, and to foster it, I\u2019d like to give a bit more details and a bit less commentary.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s look at the support role first. On the positive side, most supports are viable in nearly every skill tier. Brigitte has really popped this season and has the highest win rate for nearly all skill tiers except for Top 500, where Zen takes the lead, with both averaging out to a nearly 55% win rate. On the other end of the spectrum are Kiriko and Moira at around 45%. This goes to show, that Heroes with the highest win rates aren\u2019t always the heroes that are played the most. When we look at who is actually being played, the top supports are Ana, Kiriko, and Mercy for nearly all skill tiers until Silver and Bronze, where Moira becomes picked quite a bit. It\u2019s counterintuitive that Kiriko has such a high pick rate at the highest levels of play, but such a low win rate, and Brigitte has such a high win rate but a mediocre play rate. While it would be fun to pick on this group… we tend to think that highly skilled players are continuing to pick certain heroes for good reasons, and we\u2019re getting additional metrics for maps, team comps, and team fights to try and understand this. If it\u2019s fruitful, expect to hear more about it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tanks! Tanks are in a great spot right now. It\u2019s almost hard to pick a bad tank. At the top end, Reinhardt has the highest win rate of tanks for most tiers, reaching about 58% in Bronze through Platinum. At Masters and above, Sigma edges him out and sits at 55% in Top 500. Hog is struggling a bit, even though there are still situations where he can be successful. Winston and Zarya can perform well at certain ranks, and the rest of the roster is solid across all skill tiers. Wrecking Ball is probably the biggest tank topic in the community right now, with takes varying. Some think he\u2019s overpowered, others feel that he is in a good spot, and still, others think both\u2026 and flip flop, back and forth\u2026 His win rate is among the top 3-4 tanks at most tiers and bounces between 51-55%. His pick rate is lower in the metal ranks, increasing as player skill rises. By Top 500, he is far and away the most picked Tank. We think that this has enabled other heroes to stand out in the current meta along with Wrecking Ball, but we are keeping an eye on him and want to make sure that players don\u2019t get fatigued by seeing too much of the little guy.<\/span><\/p>\n

There have been some big swings in the Damage role. There are two stories here. From a number\u2019s perspective, DPS feels fairly balanced across the board, and Season 3 has been called the \u201cseason of hitscan\u201d by many of you \u2013 or possibly the season of Cassidy! Changes to Sojourn, as well as buffs to a few other characters, have opened a new set of heroes for people to play. Cassidy, Pharah, Widowmaker, and Tracer have all risen in playtime. In fact, Cassidy is the most picked hero by a huge margin at all ranks except for Top 500 where he\u2019s tied with Tracer, and he continues to move up. Around 30% of matches have a Cassidy on BOTH sides! Besides Symmetra, it\u2019s harder to talk about the most powerful heroes for DPS at middle to higher ranks. The band that most damage heroes fall within is between a 47%-53% win rate. Pharah, Widow, Tracer, and Sym hover around the top, but things shift around almost daily. At low ranks, the top heroes by win rate are Symmetra and Torbj\u00f6rn. It\u2019s always Symmetra and Torbj\u00f6rn! In fact, Symmetra typically has the highest win rate in the game for all roles at all ranks except Masters and above. Sombra, at the low end of power, did have a significant lift this season and has a win rate of around 46% at Diamond and above.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the current state of the game, we\u2019re not looking at doing balance changes until our midseason patch.<\/span><\/p>\n

We made some big changes to the matchmaker this season. The primary goal was to optimize the pairing of players to minimize the MMR difference within a specific role. For example, when making matches, we put more emphasis on the DPS players on each team being closer in skill than we do for the DPS players on one team being evenly matched with tank players on the other team. This has worked, and matches have a much tighter skill delta between players of the same role.<\/span><\/p>\n

There have been some other positive effects to these changes. In Ranked, queue times have dropped, and for high-skill matches, they\u2019ve dropped significantly. Average match quality has also risen across the board. Also, matches with longer queue times are typically of a higher quality now than they were previously. Previously the longer a player waited, the looser our restrictions on the skill difference could potentially be. This is still true, but that range should be more condensed.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, there have been some downsides to these changes, some of them unforeseen. Queue times have risen in Unranked a bit, and for groups with large skill differentials, they\u2019ve risen quite a bit. We\u2019ve made changes here, and queue times for Unranked are already moving lower. We\u2019ve also heard from players that they are experiencing large win\/loss streaks in game. To be clear, we don\u2019t try to cause or prevent streaks based on an ideal win rate for players. We\u2019re studying these reports and will share more information when we get it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The issue that we\u2019re hearing most from our players is encountering people from vastly different skill levels in their Ranked games. Prior to Season 3, the worst 5% of Grand Master level matches would have players 7 divisions apart, the equivalent of Gold 3 to Silver 5. When we initially shipped 2.3 this leaped to 12 divisions apart or greater. We have made numerous changes since then, and are making changes almost daily, and this has now been reduced to 9 divisions. We have additional changes planned for the midseason patch that should improve this further.<\/span><\/p>\n
