In der Nacht von gestern auf heute wurden zum mittlerweile bereits 76. Mal die Emmy Awards an herausragende Produktionen für das Fernsehen verliehen. Diese von Eugene Levy und Dan Levy beinhaltete allerdings nur die wichtigsten und größten Kategorien. Kleinere Preise für technische Errungenschaften, animierte Projekte oder Game Shows wurden bereits am vergangenen Wochenende in einem deutlich kleineren Rahmen verliehen.
Dominiert wurde diese Preisverleihung auch in diesem Fall wieder von dem Historiendrama „Shōgun„. Die Show war in 25 Kategorien nominiert und sie konnte in insgesamt 18 Kategorien den Preis erhalten. Dazu gehörten unter anderem der Preis für die beste allgemeine Dramaserie und die an Hiroyuki Sanada und Anna Sawai verteilten Preise für die besten Hauptdarsteller (männlich + weiblich) in einer Dramaserie. Mit 18 Siegen konnte „Shōgun“ sogar den Rekord für die meisten Emmys aus einer einzigen Preisverleihung brechen.
Was die Comedyserien betrifft, so gab es dort zumindest eine Überraschung. Die Show „The Bear“ galt erneut als Favorit und sie konnte sich mit 23 Nominierungen zumindest noch 11 Preise sichern. Interessanterweise musste sie den Preis für die beste Comedyserie des letzten Jahres aber an das Format „Hacks“ abtreten. Die in dieser Serie auftauchende Jean Smart erhielt ebenfalls den Preis für die beste Hauptdarstellerin in einer Comedyserie.
