Here’s a crazy bit of movie news that is going to strike a nerve with a lot of Lord of the Rings fans. New Line Cinema and Warner Bros Pictures are partnering up Embracer Group AB’s Middle-Earth Enterprises with a new multi-year deal to develop a series of new The Lord of the Rings movies!? (via)
Die schwedische Embracer Group hält aktuell die Rechte für Spiele, Filme und andere Medien, die inhaltlich auf dem von Tolkien geschriebenen Der Herr der Ringe basieren. Bereits vor Kurzem wurde bekannt, dass dieses Unternehmen diese IP stark nutzen möchte und in den nächsten Jahren deshalb auch fünf weitere LotR-Spiele erscheinen sollen. Gestern Abend gab es nun weitere Informationen dazu, wie die Embracer Group dieses Franchise im Bereich der Filme nutzen möchte.
Diese neuen Details stammen von Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. Der CEO sprach in einem in dieser Woche durchgeführten Conference Call rund um das vergangene Quartal ein wenig über die anstehenden Projekte des Unternehmens. Dabei erwähnte Zaslac unter anderem, dass Warner Bros. Discovery eine offizielle Partnerschaft mit New Line Cinema und der Embracer Group eingegangen ist. Das Ganze wurde wohl auf eine Laufzeit von mehreren Jahren ausgelegt.
Die Zusammenarbeit zwischen New Line, Embracer und Warner Bros. soll wohl auf die Produktion von neuen Filmen zu dem Herr der Ringe und auch dem Hobbit hinauslaufen. Die Abmachung zwischen den Partnern erwähnt explizit die Erschaffung von mehreren neuen Filmen zu diesen klassischen Werken von J.R.R. Tolkien. Auf diese Weise will die Firma die von vielen Fans geliebte Welt des Autors erweitern und mehr Content zu dieser IP liefern.
Der mit diesem Conference Call verbundenen Presseerklärung zufolge sind die vor 20 Jahren veröffentlichten Filme zu LotR ein Meilenstein der Filmgeschichte. Die darauf erfolgten Filme zu dem Hobbit nehmen eine ähnlich wichtige Rolle ein. Trotzdem sind die Verantwortlichen der Meinung, dass die Werke von Tolkien auf der Kinoleinwand noch relativ unerforscht sind und es viel Spielraum für neue Projekte gibt. Die Firmen möchten genau in diesen Bereich vordringen und diese Gelegenheit nutzen, um tiefer in die Projekte von Tolkien vorzudringen und den Fans neue Dinge zu liefern.
Diese Erklärung lässt es ganz danach klingen, als würden die kommenden Filme zu LotR sich mit neuen Themen beschäftigen, die bisher noch nicht verfilmt wurden. Schließlich sind LotR und der Hobbit nur kurze Momente in einer deutlich umfangreicheren Geschichte. Es gibt in Tolkiens Werken genug Potenzial für neue Ideen und Produktionen. Auch wenn das Ganze noch nicht offiziell bestätigt wurde, so scheint die Partnerschaft der Firmen zumindest im Moment keinen Reboot der klassischen Filme anzustreben.
Nach der absoluten schrecklichen Serie von Amazon bin ich persönlich ein wenig vorsichtig, wenn es um weitere Adaptionen von Tolkiens Werken geht. Allerdings finde ich erst einmal gut, dass die Firmen scheinbar neue Ideen umsetzen wollten und kein Reboot geplant ist. Kein Fan der IP möchte eine Neuauflage von LotR selbst sehen. Dafür werden die Filme von Peter Jackson einfach zu sehr geliebt. Die einzige Option für einen Reboot wäre vermutlich der Hobbit. Die Filme dazu sind bei Fans nicht annähernd so beliebt.

The agreement comes 20 years after New Line Cinema released Peter Jackson’s epic “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy. The films are among the most successful and acclaimed of all time, winning seventeen Oscars including eleven for “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” tying the record for a single film. The Studio re-teamed with Jackson for a trilogy of films based on “The Hobbit,” a co-production with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures. Combined, the six films earned nearly $6B in box office worldwide. New Line and Warner Bros. Animation are currently in production on “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” an original anime set 183 years before the events in “The Lord of the Rings.” The film tells the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan, and marches into cinemas on April 12, 2024.

This agreement is one of the deals with several industry partners, previously discussed in conjunction with Embracer’s Q3 report February 2023, that are jointly transformative.
